Funchal, Madeira

After a day at sea, we arrived at the island of Madeira.  It is a Portuguese island 500 miles off the northwest African cost.  The port was Funchal and I have to say that this was in the top five islands we have ever visited.  It was absolutely beautiful and we loved it.  Luckily, we had a nice day for photos.  I hope you enjoy them.  We boarded our motor coach for our "Small Villages and Spectacular Views" tour.  It certainly lived up to the billing!  Madeira is a rugged island with a lot of history during pirate days.  Our bus went up and down, up and down narrow roads which was kind of scarry.  We finally arrived in Nun's Valley.  Incredible views all day long!  Farming was on steep hill sides and ALL done by hand.  Trucks or cars could not even get in to haul it out.  It was carried up or down to roads.  Mostly vegetables and fruits were grown.  I did not see any livestock but that could be on other side of island.  I truly could live on this island.  It is known for its Madeira wine.  We got to taste a 35 year old Madeira wine at one stop.  This was our first time here and I hope not our last!!!
